Kirby is 'going green' and mounting cable LED lights. For evening work in the studio the space must be flooded with indirect, reflected light in addition to direct easel lighting.

WEEK 4-5: NATIVE AMERICAN ART PORTRAIT

Using an extremely thin brush, the main focus is now on the eyes - the most essential part of the painting.

As this precise work is demanding and tiring, the work must alternate channeling the soul of the subject through the eyes, and other less involving details such as feathers, "models" for which are temporarily taped to the canvas.

The background and landscape elements are sketched as rough outlines.

Out of all the stages of painting a portrait, this stage is the most crucial. This is when the painting's future is being investigated.

If Kirby decides that he did not portray the emotion he envisioned, he will destroy the canvas.

Kirby Sattler spends anywhere from 2 months to an entire year on each Native American art painting. Today we share the first stage of the process as a canvas is stretched, primed, and an initial charcoal sketch is drawn.

From the Sattler Art Studio, we promised you snippets from behind the scenes and thought you might like to see the paint brushes Kirby uses to create his amazing art portraits.

Kirby's art studio

This is Kirby's studio where he creates his famous Native American art portraits.

Since all creative process has its own ritual, Kirby’s is making his morning big cappuccinos.

Here are the steps:
- Kirby roasts green coffee beans once a week,
- every morning he grinds beans to a finest powder
- he brews coffee in a Turkish copper ibrik
- foam from farmer’s milk, he whips with an Aerolatte frothing wand
- then he sprinkles with freshly grounded cinnamon, and the cup lands in front of the studio view, which we thought we will show you as soon as we sneak up to take a photo.

Morning cappuccinos, one might suspect, are why Kirby is able to create his famous Native American art portraits.

... we were finally able to catch with our lens Kirby's ritual cappuccino he drinks every morning before he works in the Studio.
A new original masterpiece on the easel is promising another powerful portrait.
